I find that th...Thanks guys - glad you enjoyed it.

I find that the ability to grip in the gi helps to slow down the pace and gives you time to think. Some people might use that to stall, but it seems more of an issue with something like the 50/50 (mainly because 50/50 guard is still quite new: no doubt once everybody becomes familiar with it, it will be much harder to stall), rather than spider guard.

Also, I'm not a competitor, but Romulo's point that you should do nogi if you don't want grips to come into play makes a lot of sense.

After all, competitors are always going to find a way to bend the rules to their advantage, so trying to artificially impose a style of BJJ isn't going to work.

Of course, worth mentioning that Romulo himself is well known for always going for the submission, so he clearly doesn't use grips to stall.slideyfoothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05374174757753962274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19359626.post-34382593031233301512010-09-03T01:59:58.767+01:002010-09-03T01:59:58.767+01:00This is really interesting stuff! Sleeves, collar, shoes, helmet...whatever. If those things are there, use them. If they're not there, you can't use them. Maybe the spirit of the rule is to keep people from relying on grips too much, but I agree with Romulo on this one - why not just grapple no gi?SkinnyDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03828780498797612518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19359626.post-15652723891932821862010-09-02T12:27:45.038+01:002010-09-02T12:27:45.038+01:00Re tournament rules v Relson's rules - I think...Re tournament rules v Relson's rules - I think truly good BJJ players will adapt and use the rules to their advantage whichever system.

Presumably Romulo - despite being a tricksy spider guard player - would adapt just fine to the grip limit rule. I on the other hand nothing else int he kit bag so would be screwed!Meerkatsuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04147715586194844173noreply@blogger.com
