We put mat time (2-3 per week) and we spar also a lot. I became proficient at the techniques shown in the dvd. And is the knowledge I have, as good as anyone who is at blue belt level at a normal bjj school.tyjitsuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15729595115453510795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19359626.post-28197268980509849792013-09-17T18:32:42.655+01:002013-09-17T18:32:42.655+01:00Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and order f...Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and order from the states. Personally, I started in November 2006 and received my blue in February 2008, after 131.5 hours of training (yes, I'm geeky enough to have a spreadsheet ;p).

I'd agree six months seems a little fast, but then I know people who have got it in four. Roy Dean's guys compete, and he also has those demonstration videos up for almost all of his new blues, so they seem pretty legit.

Also, IIRC none of the Roy Dean blues I know (I've met about four here in the UK) got it that fast.slideyfoothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05374174757753962274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19359626.post-80881484653015262482011-01-15T01:59:03.965+00:002011-01-15T01:59:03.965+00:00Thanks for the review. I find Roys instruction very good, easy to follow and i find i remember (and use!) the techniques even months later.

One thing that puzzles me though, is i noticed at the start of the DVD he says 'when you get your blue belt in 6, 9, or maybe even 12 months'. Perhaps its different in America, but in Oz it usually takes 18-30 months to get your blue. I wonder why the difference. I knew almost all of the techniques (and quite a few more) on his DVDs but dont consider myself even close to blue. Probably mostly due to a lack of skill in executing them i'd say! Any thoughts?Steinyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17218283557149641409noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19359626.post-52293483809781485822009-12-07T17:35:27.548+00:002009-12-07T17:35:27.548+00:00No problem, Kevin: very glad to have been of help!...No problem, Kevin: very glad to have been of help!

I haven't seen the Serra DVDs yet, but I'm always interested in watching more BJJ DVDs. In...Thanks - I'm glad it proved of use to you!

In terms of putting hands on the floor, as far as I understand it (and as a mediocre blue belt, that isn't all that far), this is mainly a problem when in somebody's guard. If you put your hands on the floor, they can then attack your arm with kimuras, sweeps etc, so definitely a no-no.

However, putting out your hands when on top in mount can be sensible. In that position, you use your hands for base, helping to prevent your partner roll you off in one or the other direction.slideyfoothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05374174757753962274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19359626.post-52222012023105576872009-08-19T10:16:07.850+01:002009-08-19T10:16:07.850+01:00i bought this pretty much based on your review. I dont train bjj although i would if i could get to a class but they are all a bit far to travel. i have a background in mma and roll no-gi a lot but i like to watch bjj stuff and try and adapt it for no gi.
One thing i noticed in this dvd is roys partner in all the techniques puts his hands on the floor A LOT, especially when he was in mount. I haven't seen it for a while, but given Sauer's many years as an instructor and reputation for technical excellence, I'd be interested in taking a more in-depth look at the DVDs now I've got some experience in the sport.slideyfoothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05374174757753962274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19359626.post-90484947263689997592008-09-05T19:12:00.000+01:002008-09-05T19:12:00.000+01:00Great review! I've come across this DVD set a few times online now, I just might have to give in and get it finally haha Roy Dean's academy is just a couple hours south of where I train. I had the chance to meet him a couple months ago at the Lobo Academy grand opening, but had other plans for that weekend by the time I found out about it.

Another blue belt training DVD I've been looking at is Pedro Sauer's White to Blue Training DVD. My instructor was trained by Pedro, but Pedro's DVD is just a tad bit more expensive than Dean's lol ($44 vs $112).Mike O.https://www.blogger.com/profile/01866800247104191172noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19359626.post-61733235301320315952008-06-10T13:33:00.000+01:002008-06-10T13:33:00.000+01:00I have to agree.
