This website is about Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ). I'm a black belt who started in 2006, teaching and training at Artemis BJJ in Bristol, UK. All content ©Can Sönmez

Class #968
Artemis BJJ (MYGYM Bristol), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 12/04/2018

Class was teaching some north south, adding in a bit about scarf hold and how that can relate to the transition.

After that, I got to dig into the BJJ Scout study of Craig Jones' knee shield, which Sam had sent me earlier. I was mainly interested in the section at the end, where BJJ Scout looks at how Jones uses his knee shield against standing passers. I didn't quite get the hang of it, but a useful start. The main thing is controlling the far leg when you're knee shielding somebody who is standing. I found I was moving into shin on shin and the like, though the major problem was how weak and tenuous my knee shield felt against somebody standing up. I need to review those vids of Sam doing it, along with the Craig Jones study. :)

We started with the beginning of the video, where he goes through some sweeping options. It felt like I had to use a lot of force to load them up on my butterfly hook, but I could at least see the mechanics, so that's a good start. The switch into a triangle is a classic option too I should try more often.

The standing stuff is more relevant to my current focus though, which has been the same focus since 2013: what the hell do I do when I'm sat in open guard and somebody wants to pass? Still not got the hang of that position, five years later. One day! :)
