08/05/2019 - Teaching | Women's Class | Side control top basics

Teaching #860
Artemis BJJ (Easton Road), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 08/05/2019

It's been a long time since I last taught the women's class. However, instructors were thin on the ground this week, as Lisa is injured, Jade's away, Ruth was busy at work and Kirsty has taken a step back from teaching. Which left only me.

I'm always happy to step in, though of course it's preferable that the women's class is taught by a woman. I ran through some basic side control material, also adding in some of that secondary and tertiary control from side control (expanding John Palmer's theory, a point I don't normally get to in the standard class, but might start including based on this experience).

I'd like to come up with a way of talking about tertiary control too. Secondary control is easy enough, as that's pulling on the elbows and weaving through the knees. Tertiary isn't so obvious: so far, main thing I've got for that is sliding a shin over the forearm to wristlock. Not sure that quite counts, but the idea is to get people to think about those other control points. I'll test it out again next time side control month comes around.
