This website is about Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ). I'm a black belt who started in 2006, teaching and training at Artemis BJJ in Bristol, UK. All content ©Can Sönmez

06/08/2019 - Tuesday daytime, testing out Mario's lapel fun techniques from Heidelcamp

Class #1186
Artemis BJJ (Easton Road), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 06/08/2019

First thing I wanted to show from camp, Mario's lapel guard. This apparently gets called squid guard (Keenan loves names like that), which as ever isn't descriptive enough for me. So I'm currently going with the much clunkier (but meh, more descriptive) 'leg overhook with lapel overwrap'.

Matt H, one of my purple belts, also showed me a pass for that position. Very useful, that could be something to teach as well, although it's probably a bit too complex for most of the class. He made the interesting point that it is much easier to learn how to play this guard than it is to learn how to pass it. A handy imbalance for the guard player. ;)
