11/10/2015 - Open Mat | Sit Up Escape Frame

Class #669
Artemis BJJ (MYGYM Bristol), Open Mat, Bristol, UK - 11/10/2015

I'm falling into that lazy pattern again of just watching people at open mat, with some occasional drilling. I had a rule for myself a while ago that I would make sure to at least get in a few rounds of sparring at open mat, so I need to re-institute that. The main training I did today was side control specifics with Simon, where he practiced that sit-up frame while I increasingly tried to break it down.

It certainly feels effective, but if I can lock down the hips and then grab their basing hand, that can collapse it. However, when Simon was able to get his arm firmly into my collar bone or shoulder, it was a powerful block. I need to go take another look at Defensive Guard, as I know Ryan Hall had an answer for when they try to lock your hips and stop you moving.

Main thing I need to do this month at open mat is practice chokes, I think. So, more one hand base drills, along with specific sparring people during open mat. A few months back I was starting to feel confident about chokes, something I need to get back to.
