04/07/2017 - Open Mat (Tuesday)

Class #840
Artemis BJJ (MYGYM Bristol), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 04/07/2017

Today I wanted to run through the material I had seen at the weekend, while proof-reading the latest issue of Jiu Jitsu Style Magazine. The focus for me at this open mat was the section from the regular JJS technique guru, Nick Brooks. I am a big fan of the gi tail choke from side control, so I was excited to see Nick had a load of similar attacks (though with their lapel, rather than yours). The baseball bat from their gi tail appears to be the most straightforward, especially if you switch to knee on belly.

Nick also has an interesting one which is essentially like the clock choke variation I like (from Felipe, via Kev) against turtle, but you're doing it from side control. It's a bit tougher to get that without cranking the neck, but I think I managed it today, just about. Even harder to get without a crank or windpipe crush is another interesting variation from Nick. This time, you can't get their lapel, so you grab your own collar instead. Pull that down into their shoulder/neck, then finish off the choke by driving your own shoulder into them.

As is my new habit, I did a Facebook Live of all that, which you can see below. I don't think it shows on the RSS, so you'll need to click through to the original post for it to show up, I think. :)
