15/05/2019 - Thursday daytime, berimbolo and special visit from Aces Jiu Jitsu Club founder Mikal Abdullah

Class #1147
Artemis BJJ (Easton Road), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 16/05/2019

Head to hip on the berimbolo, a tip I almost forgot about from Andris on the Grapplers Guide. Also, like Mikal's student Alvin showed, you can get to the same position from the basic x guard sweep where you tilt them back (though he might have done it from deep de la Riva x, which would be a slightly different leg position, I think?). Grabbing the hip is also fine, rather than grabbing the leg.

It was really cool to have Mikal there. I first met Mikal on my 2012 Texas trip, my first ever visit to the US. That was an incredible trip, which brought home to me how amazing the jiu jitsu community can be, plus it had a huge impact on my jiu jitsu (particularly John Palmer and his control point theory). When I next visited in 2014, the year both of us started our own BJJ clubs. We've each come a long way since then, especially Mikal. He's grown Aces Jiu Jitsu Club to very impressive numbers. To have over 1000 members in that short a time is incredible: I was already amazed by his entrepreneurial skills, even more so now. 😎
