14/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | Open Mat

Class #1012
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Sportoase Leuven), Open Mat, Leuven, Belgium, 14/07/2018

2nd open mat time, rolls with Morgane (morrrr-han), plus Weronika. Framing, trying Priit method. Watch for neck grips in turtle, hand fighting in side control. Pressing armbars, also kimura grip. With Ralph, north south, threaten the breadcutter, wait for arm to bend, then forehead it.

With Priit turtle, will keep trying, but wary of chokes. Karla choked me at Heidelcamp when I tried it, so gotta be careful. Perfect time to panda, when to do? Also did a bunch of X guard sweeps, knocking backwards. İf they kneel, what was his follow up? Think he had one, knocks them over.

12/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | David Morcegao (Wristlocks)

Class #1009

Some more good tips from David, on wristlocks. The main one that stuck with me is from side control. When you're going for an attack on the other arm, you can kneel on their other arm, using that control to wristlock.

11/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | 80s Open Mat

Class #1007
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Sportoase Leuven), Open Mat, Leuven, Belgium, 11/07/2018

Christian, taking it easy, advising that I should be more aggressive with open guard, usual problem. Good roll with Weronika, tight on back, only left small gaps. Then with Niels, using frames, into Priit defence. Knee held up ok, pleased with that.

11/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | Kenny Polmans (Butterfly guard)

Class #1006
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Sportoase Leuven), Kenny Polmans, Leuven, Belgium, 11/07/2018

Butterfly guard from Kenny, well taught as always.

11/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | Priit Mihkelson (Side control escapes)

Class #1005
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Sportoase Leuven), Priit Mihkelson, Leuven, Belgium, 11/07/2018

I've been taught this class by Priit quite a few times now, it's always useful to see it another time. Priit's teaching style isn't typical, so I find it takes multiple lessons for me to glean the details of his technique.

10/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | Chris Ulbricht (Back take versus opposite side half guard pass)

Class #1004

Chris' class is up on the GIA site too. :D

10/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | Alexander Neufang (Kimura)

Class #1003
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Sportoase Leuven), Alexander Neufang, Leuven, Belgium, 10/07/2018

Handily, the excellent BJJ Globetrotters in Action site records videos of most of the classes, which means a lot less videoing required from me. It also means I can embed it here: hooray! :D

10/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | Fran Vanderstukken (Passing)

Class #1002
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Sportoase Leuven), Fran Vanderstukken, Leuven, Belgium, 10/07/2018

Fran started off by recapping her half guard pass from last time. Solid details on the hip switch pass versus half guard, then on to the over-under pass. I love the super scientific way she approached that pass, carefully isolated angles and movement. She finished off with passing inverted guard, useful as that's not something I see taught all that often. Another great class, Fran's sessions are always a highlight.

09/07/2018 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Leuven 2018 | Triangle Mechanics (Jay Bell)

Class #1001
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Sportoase Leuven), Jay Bell, Leuven, Belgium, 09/07/2018

The main difference to how Bell does his triangle is that he finishes straight on with a squeeze, rather than the swivel to the side I like to do (from Ryan Hall's method). Initialy set up is kicking the leg firmly into their shoulder/neck, extending to create some pressure. It's your thigh that hits in, then clamps down firmly. Lift your hips to prevent stacking and increase pressure even futher. Your other leg locks that in place, going over the shoulder to prevent any space.

To finish, pull down on their head as you lift the hips. You might need to rotate their head. Should that not succeed, there were a few follow-ups, like switching into an armbar and reverse triangles underneath the body.

After an overnight FlixBus from the UK, travelling under the sea in a train, I arrived at the promised land: Leuven 2018! It's fitting that my 1000th class of BJJ is at the Leuven BJJ Globetrotters Camp. They've been a massive part of my BJJ training since 2015, when I attended my first camp, which was also the first iteration of the Leuven Camp. That's grown to the biggest of all the BJJ Globetrotters Camps, a major event in the international BJJ calendar. I now build my whole year around the Leuven Camp, something I intend to attend annually.

It's also helped inspire me to try and set up my own mini-camps, so try and reduce that Post Camp Blues: I'm thinking April and October would tide me over, though my first 'test' camp is going to be August 25th and 26th. If anyone reading this is interested in popping down to Bristol for 8 hours of training with 6 black belts (including Seymour 'Meerkatsu' Yang), click here. ;D

Olivier presented a useful overview of the main sweeps from x guard. He does it further apart than I'm used to, with one leg hooking right up by the hip, the other behind the knee. You can tip them backwards, push into their leg and technical stand. If you combine a push with a backwards tilt, you might get their foot off the floor, which you can then grab to drive and knock them over.

To pass, Olivier suggested pulling up on the arm, thrusting your hips forward. With your other hand, grab behind their knee, then do a quick rotate inside with your leg to remove their hook. That leg then immediately kicks back, so you can slide down and move into a pass.
