Class #1147
Artemis BJJ (Easton Road), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 17/05/2019
It was just Paulina today, but really good session, very fun rolling with her. She has improved so much: genuinely passed my guard twice, I wasn't taking it easy on her. Awesome! Nothing better than seeing your students get better, particularly small female students who have to overcome a lot (e.g., big white belts using too much strength, getting stuck defending all the time, technique often being negated by pure strength even when they're doing things right, that kind of thing).
That meant it became a private lesson. She wanted to continue working on berimbolos and lasso sweeps, so we kept that up. Sparring was super useful for me too, as I learned lots about my x guard and set ups. I was finding that if I was trying to grab a collar, always immediately shoot the other hand for the other collar if they block. They worked repeatedly. Once I can overhook the leg, x guard becomes much easier. Setting it up by pushing the far leg helps, disrupt their balance, then pull them back in once I've got the leg in place.
I was also using deep de la Riva x more to go for that same x guard sweep. It was a feature of the session, because Alvin (Mikal's student) had recommended a deep de la Riva x set up yesterday for the berimbolo. Useful stuff.
This site is about Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ). I've trained since 2006: I'm a black belt, teaching and training at Artemis BJJ in Bristol, UK. All content ©Can Sönmez

15/05/2019 - Thursday daytime, berimbolo and special visit from Aces Jiu Jitsu Club founder Mikal Abdullah
Class #1147
Artemis BJJ (Easton Road), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 16/05/2019
Head to hip on the berimbolo, a tip I almost forgot about from Andris on the Grapplers Guide. Also, like Mikal's student Alvin showed, you can get to the same position from the basic x guard sweep where you tilt them back (though he might have done it from deep de la Riva x, which would be a slightly different leg position, I think?). Grabbing the hip is also fine, rather than grabbing the leg.
It was really cool to have Mikal there. I first met Mikal on my 2012 Texas trip, my first ever visit to the US. That was an incredible trip, which brought home to me how amazing the jiu jitsu community can be, plus it had a huge impact on my jiu jitsu (particularly John Palmer and his control point theory). When I next visited in 2014, the year both of us started our own BJJ clubs. We've each come a long way since then, especially Mikal. He's grown Aces Jiu Jitsu Club to very impressive numbers. To have over 1000 members in that short a time is incredible: I was already amazed by his entrepreneurial skills, even more so now. 😎

28/01/2017 - 4th Seminar with Chelsea Bainbridge-Donner & Tom Barlow
Seminar #023
Artemis BJJ, Chelsea Bainbridge-Donner & Tom Barlow, Bristol, UK - 28/01/2017
To celebrate the third year anniversary of Artemis BJJ, Chelsea and Tom were back for their fourth seminar. As always, it was excellent. The main reason I bring down black belts to teach seminars on the MYGYM Bristol mats is to expand my students' horizons. For my own game, I focus on a narrow range of techniques, specifically selected to avoid doing any damage to my body, as well as relying on the least amount of physical aptitude possible.
So, to have somebody like Chelsea down is perfect, given that as a prominent competitor in the black belt division she is well versed in the modern style. Who better to teach us about berimbolos than a teacher at the Mendes brothers' Art of Jiu Jitsu school? :)
For this seminar, she ran through the berimbolo and de la Riva techniques. Exactly what I wanted from Chelsea, flashy stuff I don't use so much. :D
